Isaiah's Story
mom-of-isaiah - 06:21pm Mar 2, 2011 ESTMy name is Tyaisha and this is the story of my son Isaiah. Isaiah was born 8-19-10 at Saint Margaret at 29weeks via emergency c-section after i took a bad fall down the stairs. Isaiah was 2lbs 11oz 16in. Isaiah was immediately taken to the NICU and put on a ventilator. Five days later i ways able to go home but I had to leave Isaiah behind

that was the worse feeling ever. I would go and visit my son everyday. At 2weeks Isaiah caught a pic-line infection and the hospital felt there machines were not equip for Isaiah's condition. Isaiah was then air lifted to the University of Chicago. I was so terrified

There, Isaiah was put on an oscillator which would help his breathing. At a month old, the infection started to worsen. The doctors said Isaiah had a pneumatocele. A pneumatocele is a air pocket that sits on your lung creating a blockage, it will usually almost always go away on its on in time. Well that wasn't the case for Isaiah. It just continued to grow and grow blocking more and more of his lung tissues and on top of that, he caught pneumonia 4 times within two months. At 3months the pneumatocele had taking over half of Isaiah's left lungs and doctors were very concerned. On 11-9-10 Isaiah had surgery to remove half of his lung. OMG...I was sooooo afraid for my son. All i could do was to release him into God's hand and let his will be done. Isaiah surgery went well. He was put back on the vent for about two weeks then switched to cpap then to the regular cannula. Isaiah is now going on 7months and is still in the NICU. He now weighs 15ibs 12oz and still requires a significant amount of oxygen. Doctors were discussing doing a trach collar but i am against it (more scared of it). I am a teacher and I had to take the school year off in order to be with my son and it has been very hard on me and my entire family. I stayed positive and prayed up. Hopefully my baby will be able to come home very soon. And thats Isaiah's journey thus far.

Hi Tyaisha, welcome to Share. My son has a trach and I was terrified when he first got it. I'm a nurse but knew NOTHING about them. While I was signing consents for the surgery I cried. After a couple weeks in the hospital Nathan was able to come home for the first time in his life at 20 weeks old. My husband and I quickly learned how to take care of the trach, the hospital gave us a lot of training before we left the hospital and we had home nursing in place for once we got home.
Please know that if your son does need a trach it's not as bad as it seems. We are all afraid of them because we don't really know much about them, but it's not as bad as it seems once you get used to it. My son wasn't on a ventilator with his trach but there is another mom on here whose son had a trach and a ventilator so I will have her respond also in case your son will also need a ventilator.
Please email me if you have any questions or just need more support. I remember how scary it was when the doctors first mentioned his trach, so feel free to email me if you need anything.

Hi,
Welcome to Share, congrats on the birth of Isaiah, I'm so sorry he has dealt with so many obstacles already.
My son Tucker spent 8 1/2 months in the NICU before coming home with a trach and ventilator. I felt the same way you do-scared and anti-trach. It wasn't really as bad as I thought, and Tucker's trach was removed over a year ago. You can read my blog Tucker Ray-Our Little Fighting Tiger, and look at pictures from 2006-2009 to see how he looked with the trach.
Please keep us updated, and let me know if I can help at all.
