Baskets for parents in the NICU
lharrington - 06:52pm Nov 17, 2011 ESTI am starting a drive this holiday season to put together baskets for the parents in the NICU at Christmas. I was a parent in the NICU over many holidays and I know how alone I felt.
I just started the drive and my local Meadville PA Moose Lodge 2505 are helping as well. They will be a drop off location for the items anyone would like to donate for the baskets. I am looking for any suggestions, ideas, etc anyone may have.
I would like to deliver the baskets around the 2nd week in December.
Thank you in advance for any help or ideas.

Come to ShareUnion 2012: It's the BEST weekend ever!!! |

My one idea is to include books that parents can read to their babies. I always felt like I was just staring at my son until I started reading to him, it made me feel more like a real parent. This is a wonderful thing you are doing.

What a great thing to do! Since it is around the holidays, maybe a Christmas outfit. My daughter was in the NICU on her first Christmas and the last thing that I wanted to do was to go pick out an outfit.

Welcome to Share! I LOVE this idea:) I had a little one in the NICU over some of the holiday season too. Maybe an item with "Baby's 1st x-mas." Many families have digital cameras nowadays, but a lot don't. A disposable camera is always a good thing too. Maybe a little book of crosswords and word searches for the parents. I know it's hard to concentrate on anything other than one's baby, but a little 5-10 minutes to zone out in the hospital's cafeteria or something could help too.
Best of luck,
Lindsay

I was a NICU mom for an extended period also. I have celiacs disease and special dietary restrictions as a result of that. Unfortunately for me the hospital café was across the road and I hated to leave my baby and go wait in cafeteria lines. I ended ordering food for the hospital delivery service everyday. For breakfast it was the same two hard boiled eggs and lunch and dinner were interchange ably bad.
All because I was a person who couldn't eat what was usually served for delivery. I would suggest inquiring about parents with dietary issues so they don't have a terrible xmas meal like I did!!!
Thanks for much for thinking of these parents. I am thinking of trying something like this next yr!
