Could My baby be failing to thrive?

TSprouse0109 - 08:01pm Jan 18, 2012 EST

My daughter was born With IUGR at 34 wks weighing 2lbs 9.9 oz. She was thriving alot in the NICU and was able to come home at 3wks 1 day old and she continued to gain weight until she hit 6lbs at 2 months old. Now she is 6 months old and weighs 10lbs 8 oz. Her neonatologist thinks she could have acid reflux and put her on Prilosec but that doesnt seem to be working because she still only eats maybe 19 oz a day If we are lucky. My daughter never seems to want her bottle and only eats maybe 3 oz a feeding. The doctors have us seeing a Pediatric GI this month but im so confused on what it could be. Can someone help me or offer advice because I am starting to feel like im doing something to make my daughter not grow.

Tiffany- I think the weight progress (or lack thereof) was the most frustrating for us b/c it did seem like it was something you should be able to fix. After 5 years at the GI and a lot of extra calorie formula, she is still sleight but tall, but that is from a recent growth spurt. I would expect alot of blood work at the GI the first time to rule out some allergies and anamolies.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Update:
So we went to the gi and he had my baby go get an upper gi test done and that came back normal. He then had us try erythromsin to try to make her stomach empty faster but that didn't work. She even decreased in her feeds now. So we may have to admit her into the picu to get a feeding tube put back in. But, her pediatrician thinks she may have Russell silver syndrome so we are now doing the genetic testing for that and going to see a geneticous in September. This is so stressful. And because she isn't gaining enough weight we can't start rice cereal and baby food. Which is making me think that she might get further behind with her feeding development because she is 6 mo adjusted today and almost 8 mo old. I just which I had some answers.

Mom to Emilyn and Hailey (our 20 week angels) and Elim (our 38 week, full term miracle)!

I'm so sorry that the erythromycin didn't work for her and she's going to have to have another surgery. I'll keep you both close in my thoughts and prayers and hope that all goes well and that they figure what is going on with your sweet girl. Hugs!

I am sorry that you are still searching for answers. Try not to worry about starting solids, they can get everything from the various formulas but it is hard to watch and wait. Please keep us updated and good luck.

Come to ShareUnion 2012: It's the BEST weekend ever!!!

Is it possible the erythromycin caused belly pain so she wanted to eat less? My son has been on it for the same reason, to help with gastric emptying and it always seems to have the reverse effect because it causes belly pain and then he doesn't want to eat. Good luck.
Laura
