Choking

Katie87 - 03:39am Feb 16, 2012 EST

Hello all,
As many of you know my 27 weeker has reflux. She is on Zantac. The painful squirming has lessened. Recently she has a lot more saliva in her mouth and sometimes chokes on it. Sometimes it's a cough and sometimes she gets this look on her face that she is struggling to swallow the spit or also this happens during a feeding. Her monitor never alarms but her face to me looks pale when it happens, then again it scares me so bad I don't know what I see if that makes sense. I wish the doctor could actually see when she does this because as you can see I'm having a hard time explaining. This scares me and she is close to getting off the monitor and I'm so scared one of these episodes will happen at night. The formula we are on seems to be working so well and we add two teaspoons of rice cereal to her bottle. Also another question kind of random but do I keep going to her pediatrician to advise me when to increase the amount of formula she gets each bottle? He has been helping with that so far but as the appointments become less and less how will I know? One gets so used to the Nicu and the directions they give... I know I had another concern to share but it's slipped my mind. Anyway, advice and thoughts are welcome.

Come to ShareUnion 2012: It's the BEST weekend ever!!!

Katie, Liz is right. You are doing everything right - you watch her while she seems to be choking and monitoring her color. As for the feeds, you will know when she needs more. If she finishes her bottle and still seems hungry try giving her a little more, you'll know when she is ready for more.
