Baby James

Melberry86 - 08:23pm Feb 24, 2012 EST

I was 27wks and 2days when I started to get contractions. It was Friday, June 4 2011. I didn't think they were contractions at first, I thought they were Braxton hicks. This was my first pregnancy and didn't know what to expect. The contractions got stronger & closers together. I went to the bathroom where I discovered I was bleeding a lil with alot of discharge. I panicked and called my husband to come take me to the ER.
We came very fast and took me to Bremerton hospital down the street from us. We checked in and were told there was no birth center at the hosptial. So, I was transfered to Silverdale Harrison hospital. Once we arrived, I was check and was told I was already 3cm dilated. They started the magnisum to stop my contractions and recieved my first dose of steriods shot. Me and my husband were so terrified. I was crying and he had a blank look on his face...why was this happening to us? Our baby was ready to come already and I wasnt even in my third trimester yet!
The doctor explained that I need to be transfer to Tacoma General ASAP since they are specalist for preemie babies. Before I was transfered, I dilated to 5cm.
We arrived to Tacoma General after 1am. I had three doctors come in and explain what might happen. So many stories of what to expect with delivery and how my baby will be like. All these stories made me even more freaked out! They checked me agian and I amazing was 7cm dilated! They were all prepared to deliver my baby any moment.
But, my contrations slowed and I stopped dilating. But I still stayed in the delivery room for the rest of the night and tried to get some sleep!
The next day, I was still at 7cm and still on magnisum. I stayed in the delivery room all that day and recieved my 2nd dose of steriods that night.
The following day which was Sunday, I was transfered into another room since I wasnt going to give birth right away. I stayed in that room all Sunday and most of monday. Monday afternoon, they decided to take me off the magnisum and see what happens after. They didnt want me to stay at 7cm for very long, I could get an infection and that wouldnt be good. So that evening, I was transfered in a delivery room and wait some more to see if my lil guy will come out.
Very early tuesday morning, I had to go to the bathroom really bad. I made a huge bowl movement than was able to go back to sleep. Not even an hour later, I had another erge. But this time it wasnt that, It was my baby ready to come out! Doctor rushed in and checked me...I was 9cm dilated and ready to have this baby! Contractions came on very hard & strong. About 30mins later, James Ryan was born at 0443 on June 7 2011. He came out crying and I felt so relieved to hear that sound! I had a feeling he will be just fine!
He weighted 2lb and 15oz and was 15 3/4" long. My husband took my mother & mother inlaw to see him first. I saw my baby boy that evening after I got to shower & take a nap. I wasn't expected of what he would look like. I was absolutely amazed of how tiny and very thin he was. I didn't know how to feel. I felt very emotional cause of all the wires on him, I didn't know how to handle it. I didn't even know what to say to him, I just felt numb. I bursted out tears after walking out of the room, I couldn't imagine why this had to happen to us!
But everyday got a lil easier. His lungs were fully developed that he was only on CPAP for the first week and then switched to a cannula just for extra air so he wont over work his lungs. I was able to produce breast milk and he was able to receive it in his feeding tube.
I have to say, the days..wks & months watching him develope and mature was quite the experience. He just amazed me everyday of how well he was doing! He got to do all these things before he was suppost to be born! I was able to breast feed him when he was about 34wks and he was able to drink from a bottle. It was just so amazing! He just seemed such a happy healthy baby. He had no health issues and all he needed was to mature.
James spent 2 1/2 months in the NICU/ICN in Tacoma General. We finally got to take him home on August 19 2011 with no monitors or breathing machines! He was one miracle baby!
Now its Feburary and he is 8 1/2 months old! He is one smart, strong lil man! I am so proud of him, he is one happy baby after all he has been through!
