My brother Jacob
floridasunflower89 - 06:39pm Mar 16, 2012 ESTMy brother Jacob was born June 4 1998. He was born one month early. March of Dimes research in 1985 developed a drug called surfactant which helps preemies breath. Surfactant is what was given to my brother while he was in the nicu. Now most of the time children are not affected by being premature after about the age 3 can’t even tell they were, but this is not the case with my brother. Now at the age 15 my brother has no since of smell. This has affected his life tremendously, because he was unable to smell he was never really aware of his own BO and if he forgot to put on deodorant after gym well he really couldn’t tell, this was the cause of bullying. My brother went through bullying so bad that he has been removed from the public school system and is now home schooled.

Welcome to Share. I am glad to hear that your brother Jacob made his way through the NICU and finally home. I'm glad that your mom was able to get surfactant as well. Upon graduating the NICU, sometimes we can't know what health issues might arise at a later time.
Having been through high school and now a high school teacher myself, unfortunately, some kids can be cruel. I blame the parents. It's so unfair that he had to go an alternate route. Every kid deserves the right to attend school without those worries. I hope that he is thriving with an online/at-home program and graduates before those bothersome peers.
All my best,
Lindsay
