Katie87 - 12:03am Mar 18, 2012 EST

Hello everyone. I have not been able to get on and chat in a while but tonight i'm having a meltdown. My 27 weeker emma is going in for bilateral hernia aurgery monday morning and my husband who has bad allergies now sounds hoarse and has a bit more congestion then usual, maybe could ne getting a cold but doesn't feel bad and is not feverish. I'm freaking out in tears I mean he handled her just this morning before work. I could be carrying it if its a cold. Emma is up to date on her synagis vaccines for rsv which is good. What do we do? We have masks that we can wear and know how to keep our hands clean. What else can we do? I'm nervous enough about the surgery and even more upset now. I need help, I need breaks, I need my rock of a husband. Now I dont even know if its safe for him to hold her? Of course my pediatrician is not on call and I dont want to page the one thats on call bc I dont know them and they would probably think im a nut... Im asking for help, advice, reassurance and if you will, pray. She is nine lbs now so at least she isn't super tiny. I imagine her airways are that of a term baby now?

Come to ShareUnion 2012: It's the BEST weekend ever!!!

Hi Katie, I'm sure with the season's changing it's probably just allergies your husband is experiencing. That being said, it could also be a cold and since you all live in the same house, you can't prevent Emma from getting it. The first cold is always scary but it will come and go and you will all make it through. With her surgery coming up mention your husbands symptoms to the nurse who checks her in. The nurse will also do vitals on Emma (temperature and things like that) to make sure she is healthy. They will only do her surgery as long as she doesn't have a temperature and no signs of illness. They will do everything they can to allow her to have the safest sugery/recovery possible. I'm hoping that you all stay healthy and her surgery goes well.

Mom to Emilyn and Hailey (our 20 week angels) and Elim (our 38 week, full term miracle)!

Hi Katie! Deep breath. Laura is right, the best you can do is to try to prevent her from getting it. It sounds like you are already doing a great job of it already by doing all the hand washing! Just make sure that your husband washes his hands before touching Emma, if you want to be doubly careful you could maybe have him throw on a shirt over the one he's wearing when he picks her up like you would a gown in the NICU. Also agree with mentioning to the nurse checking her in of your husbands symptoms and she'll be sure to check over your sweet Emma thoroughly to make sure she is healthy enough for her surgery. I hope that Emma stays healthy and that her surgery goes well! I was wondering how your sweet girl was doing! Please keep us posted on how her surgery goes. Hugs and prayers coming your way!

I love my kids!

Morning Katie, nice to see you posting.

I'm sure Emma will be fine. I agree with Laura. They wouldn't do any type of surgery on a sick child. I'll be praying for a smooth surgery and quick recovery.

I'm going to tell you what I read, with what you typed up above.

All panic aside,

Fact-You don't know if hubby is sick or allergies....Don't always assume the worse.
Fact- Emma is up to date on Synagis shots. Shouldn't matter if hubby is potentially sick.
Fact-You are taking precautions, hand sanitizing and masks.
Fact-You did have a melt down. Past tense.

Sometimes, we don't give ourselves enough credit when dealing with our little ones. Whole fact of the matter....Read all of the facts I just typed. You are doing everything right. You are doing the best that you can. If I could, I'd help you and give you some breaks.

Love ya girl, keep up the great work!!

Keep us updated on sweet Emma!
