Garrett's NICU days

amiee113 - 09:15pm Mar 29, 2012 EST

I had a pretty normal pregnancy except during my 28th week. My OB said that I had become RH sensitized and we were going to have to pay close attention with blood work and ultrasounds to make sure that my body would not try to fight off the pregnancy. I had blood work and ultrasounds regularly and there were no changes which was supposed to be a good thing. On New Years Day I woke up and immediately realized that he wasn't moving like he usually did. I drank juice, ate cookies, jumped up and down, tried to move my belly but nothing seemed to work. I called my OB and he told us to go to the hospital where he met us there. Within two hours, my sweet baby boy was born via emergency C section. When he was born there was a faint cry and then he taken to the NICU. This was at 3pm and we didn't know what was going on. Later in the evening it was explained to us that his little body was very sick. All of his organs were failing and he was going to have to have a blood transfusion and platelets amoung all of the other things that were not doing good. My body had started fighting off his red blood cells. I finally got to see him at 1am that next morning. I had never thought that I would be visiting the NICU. I was supposed to have my baby in the room with me and hold him and love on him. But instead I could only put my hand on his head in the incubator. He was in the NICU for 23 long days and improved every single day. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to go through in my life. The visits to the NICU to see Garrett were absolutely wonderful but I hated to have to leave him there. Especially at night. I cried a lot. No one realizes what it is like until you go through it. Garrett is now 12 weeks old and has had all of his blood work come back normal finally. He is amazingly strong and has gone through more in his short life than I have gone through in my whole life.

Hello and welcome to share. Congratulations on the birth of Garrett. I am so glad that he finally made it home with you. I have the Kell antigen and know how scary it is. I had to go for weekly ultrasounds to check her blood flow, and we were continually worried about Hydrops developing.
Thank you for sharing your story
Brooke
