The first cold

Katie87 - 12:00am Apr 16, 2012 EST

Hello everyone, my sweet Emma Kate (27 weeker) has her first cold. She just has nasal congestion and sneezes a lot. She gave mom and dad the cold. Mine went straight to my sinuses so I have a sinus infection but my husband has an awful head cold. We both are sneezing and coughing from drippage. I plan on calling the pediatrician tomorrow but in the mean time my worries set in. Can we make her any worse by us being sick and handling her? We all use Purell and wash hands but I worry still... How do I know if it's in her chest? She has no fever, still eats like a piglet, but the congestion has been there for a few day, does not seem worse but not better either. She went this past Thursday for her six month checkup and her lungs sounded clear and they went ahead and gave her the shots she was due for. She also had her last synagis the week before that. She is not big on the bulb suctioner thingy and really got mad at the saline drops but alas I still try to use both. Just need some reassurance or advice. Hope everyone is well

Come to ShareUnion 2012: It's the BEST weekend ever!!!

Katie, you can't make her any worse by being around her. You are doing everything you can for her. Of course she will need to be seen if she seems to be having trouble breathing but other than that it sounds like it's just a cold for her. She's still eating OK and not working to breathe - wonderful. I'm sure your pediatrician will see her if you want her to be seen but in the meantime it sounds like you're doing a great job!

Mom to Emilyn and Hailey (our 20 week angels) and Elim (our 38 week, full term miracle)!

Ditto what Laura said! You can't make her worse by being around her if you've all got the same thing! Just keep on doing what you're doing with the hand washing and purelling! The things you need to watch for are if she is breathing faster than normal or if you can see her sucking the skin in between, above or below her rib cage. Keep on with the saline and suction, and also maybe get a cool mist humidifier for her for when she is sleeping. Even if you use the saline alone, that will help loosen up the secretions. Viruses can last from 7-14 days so it may hang around. As always, if you feel uncomfortable I'm sure her pediatrician wouldn't mind checking her out to make sure she's doing well! Keep us posted, and big hugs! Their first sickness is always scary especially when they're so little! My son got RSV when he was 2 weeks old and was so tiny.

I love my kids!

Hi katie! Elevate the head end of the crib. Helps with the phlem and congestion. Cool mist humidifier. Cough and snots, hard to breath...stick her head in the freezer. Shrinks the capalaries and calms down the spasms in her lungs. I've done all of these and keep the head of her bed elevated all the time. T is just fine.

Keep us updated on her!
Liz
