Upper GI/Swallow test
liz loschinskey - 06:29pm May 10, 2012 ESTI love my kids! What's the difference and why did I have to schedule 2 seperate appointments?
2 doses of barium and radiation.
That poor girl, she's had so much radiation in her little life. She will be glowing before we know it.
Any reading I'm doing on these is they xray different spots with different consistancies of foods...?
Help!

Hi Liz -
From what I have read, it appears that the swallowing tests and upper GI are often done at the same time. X-rays of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum are taken as the barium passes through. You'll have to ask the doc why two separate tests were ordered in her case. Perhaps he thinks it will be too long a procedure for her to do in one sitting?
Whether it's one or two tests, I hope the results prove helpful. Keep us posted,
Lindsay W.

I think they're done by different people. If they can't get them together then they probably have to be done separately. I'm pretty sure the swallow studies are done by speech pathologists and the upper GI is done by a radiologist. But sometimes a radiologist is there for a swallow study too, so I don't know! I'm so sorry that she's going to have to go through this twice, maybe you could see if there's any option to get them done together? Hugs!

Liz, Nathan always has them seperately to get more accurate results. They typically do the Upper GI first and then a few days later the swallow study. The Upper GI and Swallow Study look at different things, Upper GI looks at the intestines/stomach and the Swallow Study looks at just how she swallows and holds things in her mouth/esophagus. I know it's annying and scary to have both done but you will get more accurate results when they are done seperately.
